Pinellas County WWTP
St. Petersburg, FL, USA
The sewage treatment plant in Pinellas County, Florida uses UniMags extensively for water and sewage treatment. In mid 2001, a 20" UniMag was installed as a billing meter whereby Pinellas County charged the City of St. Petersburgh for effluent treatment. UniMag provided consistent NIST traceable accuracy and repeatability with zero maintenance despite the NIST-traceable electrodes and sensors being permanently coated with sewage grease and iron sulphide.
The black coating in the picture is iron sulphide, which precipitates from hydrogen sulphide in contact with steel pipes. Competitive conventional magnetic flowmeter accuracy would be affected by such coatings. In March, 2005, modifications to the sewage treatment plant provided the opportunity for the old 20" UniMag to be checked by a new NIST traceable UniMag in series with it. After 4 years, the old untouched UniMag's accuracy was within 0.5% of the new UniMag.
